This is one of the happier moments over the past couple of weeks. It has been a really challenging time. My mental health has been a rollercoaster. Why? Both kids have been on sleep strikes.

Our toddler has been sick and going through something developmentally. He's been refusing naps and bedtime and waking multiple times throughout the night, needing a parent beside him.

Our 6 month old, who already fought bedtime, has been waking every 30 minutes. She's sick, just got through some teething, developing, moved to the crib (unswaddled) and possibly things we don't even know.

What this means is two very tired parents with no support outside the home. I haven't slept more than two hours straight or three in a night since I can remember. My emotional regulation is spent.

IT IS SO HARD

This morning, I had a series of moments where I wanted to just climb out of myself or this life or this cycle. I just want to sleep. Even knowing all the right things and tools didn't help in this moment, and I just had to make space for my really really big emotions.

I truly don't know how to do this somedays, especially just us or a lot of the time, just me. When even my basic needs aren't being met, it is so hard to get out of that headspace. I know this is temporary, but it feels impossible when you're in it for this long without a break!

What are some ways you get through times like this?

Take a moment to really define YOUR values. So often, we just pass down inherent things or things based on what we think we should be doing as parents. Intentionally defining what we really feel deep down is right for our family is so important.

Allowing children to be a part of these values and knowing them and understanding them helps them feel equal in our family unit, and that's so important!

"Discipline is one of the most important personality traits in everyone's life. It refers to a set of rules and regulations that are to be followed while undergoing any task or activity. It is a way of being honest, hard-working, motivated, and encouraged while doing any task."

Children thrive on consistency and example. By being disciplined in our own lives, they know what to expect from us and can start adopting that to their own growth when they're ready.

This may even look like consistent time for self care, or time each day with your kids where you're totally present with them, or meal times, etc.

It's amazing to me how not ready babies come into the world. The fourth trimester is not talked about enough and even beyond.

These babies need us, even instinctually, out of fear for comfort and soothing, out of basic needs, out of connection and love.

We are not set up to meet these needs and to meet our own needs in our current society. As moms, we think we are failing when we can't do it all, but we aren't provided the tools we need to "do it all" because we shouldn't be doing it all.

So often we let our fears and the way we see the world impact our children. It is hard not to! When it is not a matter of safety, I still want to use what I know to pull them past the lesson itself, without intending to do that.

Our reactions come from a space of experience, perhaps trauma response or even the role of caretakers.

Our children have this beautiful, imaginative, and curious blank slate that they are craving to fill with their own life experiences and lessons, aside from our own.

In order to intentionally parent and allow that space for them to be their own person, we have to consciously keep our own perceptions from bleeding into their reality.

This morning, we had our 6-month visit plus shots. It's always such a hard thing for me because allowing that pain for them goes against everything we feel as a mom.

What really struck me was the outdated advice from our pediatrician. We love her for the kids because they love her and the way she connects with them. That said, I'm glad I'm not a lost parent seeking her guidance because it's scary.

From filling a bottle with cereal to saying our 6 month old is manipulating us to just leaving her to cry to 2 full cups of food a day by 9 months. Being a parent is so hard!

How can we expect to stay current and feel supported with best practices if even our medical professionals don't? Who do we look to for guidance?

I left feeling thankful I'd found my way to current information prior to this visit and felt secure in our parenting choices for our family. But, how many leave feeling helpless and confused?!
